Somebody’s baby still

a life is a life, regardless of a person’s race, beliefs, gender or status.

no life is inconsequential

even for the villagers in indonesia who may not seem to have much impact on the world, they mean so much to each other.

Somebody’s Baby – Jon Foreman

She screams
If you’re homeless you’d sure
As hell you’d be drunk
Or high or trying to get there
Or begging for junk

When people don’t want you
They just throw you money for beer
Her name is November
She went by Autumn or Fall
It was seven long years
Since the Autumn
When all of her nightmares
Grew fingers
And all of her dreams
Grew tears

Chorus:
She’s somebody’s baby
Somebody’s baby girl
She’s somebody’s baby
Somebody’s baby girl
She’s somebody’s baby still

She says
Well if you’ve never gone it alone
Well then go ahead
You better throw the first stone
You got one lonely stoner
Waiting to bring to her knees
She dreams about heaven
Remembering Hell
As the place that she visits
And knows all to well
Every now and again
When she’s hopeful
She brushes her teeth

(Chorus)

Today was her birthday
Strangely enough
When the cops found her body
At the foot of the bluff
The anonymous caller this morning
Tipped off the police
They got her ID
From the dental remains
The same fillings intact
The same nicotine stains
The birth and the death
Were both over
With no one to grieve

(Chorus)

“the ugliest caterpillars turn into the most beautiful butteflies and the most beautiful caterpillars turn in to the ugliest butterflies” – a general biological rule.

i don’t know why humans are wired to base so many things on appearance, its annoying and shallow.

things in nature like cocoons and durians tell us its the inside that really counts :p

Visited the rahmat international wildlife museum and gallery, set up by some famous rich businessman/hunter dude, that aims to sort of preserve a few of each species of uh. Stuff. Quite a number of rare things in there, most specimens were donated or purchased, usually animals that died in zoos. Collection was really extensive and impressive, but at the same time kind of morbid. Photography wasn’t allowed, but aunt mina got authorization for me to take photos, so i spammed the bug collection :) . P1130133

Then as we were leaving, aunt mina suddenly whipped out a whole bag of those resin keychains with bugs in em and i was like omgwtfbbq. And when we were boarding the bus, out of the back of her private vehicle she lugged out a whole box of seashells from her own collection and i was like omgwtfbbqAAAbatteries.  I didn’t ask for them, but she went out of her way to get em for me just cos i was showing interest in em in museum. Felt damn paiseh and my bro called me shameless :( , but it was very awesome.

Nth much else happened after that, went to some shopping mall which was kindof boring till we were leaving, found an interestingly patterned moth on the glass panels on the way out.

Flew back to KL..

On my Way – Phil Collins

Tell everybody i’m on my way
New friends and new places to see
With blue skies ahead, yes i’m on my way
And theres no where else i’d rather be

Tell everybody i’m on my way
And i’m loving every step i take
With the sun beating down, yes i’m on my way
And i can’t keep this smile off my face

Cause theres nothing like, seeing each other again
No matter what the distance between
And the stories we tell, will make you smile
Or really lifts my heart

So tell’em i’m on my way
New friends and new places to see
And to sleep under the stars and could ask for more
With the moon keeping watch over me

Not the snow nor the rain, can change my mind
The sun will come out, wait and see
And the feeling of the wind
In your face can lift your heart

Oh… theres no where i’d rather be
Cause i’m on my way now
Well and true
I’m my way there
I’m on my way now(x3)

Tell everybody i’m on my way
I just can’t wait to be there
With blue skies ahead, yes I’m on my way
And nothing but good times to share

So tell everybody I’m on my way
And I just can’t wait to be home
With the sun beating down yes I’m on my way
And nothing but good times to show

I’m on my way
Yes, I’m on my way

Yup so that pretty much summarises the trip, now it’s back to mugging D:. Still got cell membranes, m&m, DNA & Genomics and pretty much all of chem, math, and human geog left to go. Nuuuuu. Dunno how i’m gonna make it haha.

Till the hip hops.

Visited an active volcano, and dipped a little in the hot springs around. Then made our way to some forest resort place. This entire trip was arranged by one of my dad’s associates (who we referred to as auntie mina), who apparently is some really big shot, and owns lots of property and stuff, including the forest place, Tai Pan restaurant and a theme park, as well as a whole lot of other stuff, including setting up a school i think. Quite amazing how rich and eager to please she was.. she was real nice though. Near the place was like a large patch of forest that she planned to turn into a campsite, and i’m apparently to consult her on how to do it in the most sustainable way o.o.

Then made our way to Hillpark, the amusement park she owns. Was located in a pretty ulu place though. The only surprising ride was the pirate boat thingy. It started normally at first, swinging up and down, and then suddenly it started spinning laterally and we were like wtf-ing. The most awesome part was that in those machines that have those claws that pick up soft toys and scam you of your money were filled with stuffed toy ants, scorpions, dragonflies, cockroaches and grasshoppers O:! And then just cos i expressed some interest, aunt mina went and exchanged for a whole bunch of tokens and tried to get em o.o. in the end she just got one of the workers to open up the machines and grabbed all the bugs and i was like omgwtf, but in a good way.

On the drive back to Medan spotted about 23 golden orb weavers along the telephone lines on this stretch of road. Q amazing.

Took a ferry ride to Samosir. The ferry ferries vehicles, so the entire bus boarded the ferry, which wasn’t quite as amazing as this huge truck that was also onboard. Dunno how it doesn’t sink the ferry. Another long drive, and we ended up at Simalan, where the scenery of lake Toba was simply breathtaking. No photo can ever really capture the awesomeness of the real thing. Gives you that high, on top of the world feeling J.

Also thought of 2 things today.

Realised how weak human beings are, that we have to wash and sanitize our hands everytime we touch something or we’ll “fall ill” or get diarrhoea or something. Other  animals do it all the time, and i’m assuming our ancestors did too. How have we degraded ourselves to such a state, always having to depend on technology and supplements and stuff?

Also, despite not having the luxuries of city life, many of the village folk still seem to live very content, almost stress-free lives, where they find and appreciate the simple joys in life. Kids are satisfied with toys like unused tires and improvised balls. They don’t need computer or handheld games to really enjoy themselves, as long as they have their friends. People are always smiling. Though it has to be admitted that alot of questionable things still go on like logging and burning of non biodegradable waste and caging and chaining of monkeys and other wild animals (these things can be corrected), i’m not suggesting that we should, but it seems more beneficial to society and the environment if we went back to rural living.. where life isn’t dominated and dictated by money.

Meant to Live – Switchfoot

Fumbling his confidence
And wondering why the world has passed him by
Hoping that he’s bent for more than arguments
And failed attempts to fly, fly

[Chorus]
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside
Somewhere we live inside
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside

Dreaming about Providence
And whether mice or men have second tries
Maybe we’ve been livin with our eyes half open
Maybe we’re bent and broken, broken

[Chorus]

We want more than this world’s got to offer
We want more than this world’s got to offer
We want more than the wars of our fathers
And everything inside screams for second life, yeah

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live
We were meant to live

Reached medan, drove a long distance to lake toba, and it is HUGE, to be expected of a caldera of a supervolcano. The island in the middle, Samosir, is larger than Singapore. Nothing much else happened today, besides getting my legs swarmed by ants, getting shots of a spider in a pink flower, and being terrorised by a mole cricket at dinner. They’re supposed to be kind of rare, but it got killed in the end, which got me kind of pissed.

Resolved not to mug while in Indonesia, really shouldn’t let studies invade my holiday time that’s to be spent with my family.

im not sure what possessed me to blog again, but here i am. maybe its the sudden compelling feeling to start complaining about stuff, or sharing photos or whatever.

anyway, its been really annoying how condos and developments are sprouting out everywhere.. first it was the open fields nearby, and now the forest path behind my house

pathchangeSteps

it kindof hurts that the trees and spiders and lizards that i always see when i walk home are gone.. dont know how to explain it, guess its just different.

and its a pity that the other awesome stuff living there will be affected too. like the butterflies :/

P1110060(2)

Graphium species, not sure what, found in pasir ris path

P1110047(2)

Striped Blue Crow, found at pasir ris path

i guess humans and nature just cannot coexist. assuming we’re a part of nature, we’re like some kind of terminal disease or persistent parasite, like a strangler fig, we feed of our host’s resources until all thats left is an empty shell that dies away.

Sigh its really annoying how our lives are dominated by work and studies, we hardly get to make time for ourselves, let alone others, like our families. Spent the whole day today mugging at my grammas house while the rest of the family was out shopping.. q wasted really. Its like we’re still young, we should be going out and  doing more exciting things rather than sitting at a table all day cramming our brains with information that may not always be applicable in life later on, but will be used to grade our “intelligence” and ‘ability”. To lead such sedentary lifestyles and stressing ourselves out is really quite meh.

On the bright side, the morning sun was awesome :)

Colours of the Wind

You think I’m an ignorant savage
And you’ve been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see
If the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don’t know?
You don’t know …

You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name

You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You’ll learn things you never knew you never knew

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sunsweet berries of the Earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they’re worth

The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends

How high will the sycamore grow?
If you cut it down, then you’ll never know
And you’ll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon

For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind

You can own the Earth and still
All you’ll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind

Till the butter flies
